At forty two years of age, jean-Marie Machado has joined the ranks of the famous pianists in France. For three years his Quartet Lyrisme (feat. Andy Sheppard, Paolo Fresu , Riccardo del Fra …) has remained one of the most respected bands on the French jazz scene. Born in Tangier to a portugese father and a Spanish-italian mother, Jean-Marie Machado took it upon himself to explore the musical heritage of that vast cultural matrix known as the Mediterranean. With his new Sextet Andaloucia he focuses on his own fantasy vision of Spain with a new crew that unites some of the most flamboyant personalities in contemporary jazz at the heart of Andalusian lyricism.

Andaloucia - "Cielo de vida"

"The sky over Andalusia and Tangiers shared between us like a portion of humanity. Ceaseless to-ing and fro-ing from one bank to the other, one culture to another.
Music that sings of hope – for the same sky, the same sea, the same sun for everyone to share.
These melodies from my deepest origins were part of me, and I took them with me over into the world of jazz - a world of freedom, joy and openness, where everything is possible. I've chosen four melodies by Spanish composers for this recording, all adapted from traditional songs. Men from a variety of different countries and backgrounds come together around a new musical territory they’ll explore together..."

Press review :

Le Monde
" Jean-Marie Machado knows how to come and go between the codes of jazz and improvisation and those of contemporary music. With his new sextet, he sets the tone: lyricism (...) Machado moves forward with a sense of both writing and surprise."
